Talk to Your Kids About Voting

It’s the week of the big election. In just a few days we will find out who will lead our country for the next four years. The fate of our country is in our hands. Have you talked to your children about the importance of exercising your right to vote? For most of us it will be many years before our children are old enough to vote, but if you start talking to them about it now, they may begin to realize the importance of it. I have been amazed at the things children are hearing about the election right … Continue reading

Honoring Our Children’s Individuality

I’d like you all to meet ToriAnn Perkey. She and her husband, Josh, are homeschoolers, and I’ve recently had several conversations with ToriAnn about her decision to homeschool and her philosophies concerning it. I’ll be sharing snippets of our conversation here on Families.com over the course of the next couple of weeks, and I’ll kick off by sharing highlights of our conversation about the uniqueness of children and how that led to our decisions to homeschool. I have four very bright children who keep me hopping morning, noon, and night. My decision to homeschool was largely based on my desire … Continue reading

Talking Politics With Your Young Children

I love the car. Ok, I have a serious love-hate relationship with the car. I dislike its gas-guzzling properties, but I love it for talking with my daughter. It’s the perfect conversation starter. Trapped in a confined space, you talk about all sorts of things that wouldn’t normally come up. Today’s discussion was politics. Normally I don’t talk politics much. I grew up in a family where talking about politics was poor dinnertime conversation. I have deeply-held opinions on issues and I don’t keep them quiet either, but I rarely connect them to political parties, at least not in everyday … Continue reading

Will You Be Taking Your Kids to the Polls on Election Day?

The stodgy suit wearing, watch checking, business exec who plans to vote on his lunch break might prefer you leave your squirmy little ones at home on November 4th, but countless voter advocacy groups are hoping parents across the nation will bring their children with them to the polls on Election Day. Several groups are going out of their way to make it easy for parents with children to get out and vote by providing free transportation to polling places and kid-friendly distractions inside. Because of the massive attention given to this year’s election, parents are being warned that parking … Continue reading

A Few of My Favorite Things: Geography

Geography is one area where we hit the ground running. When I taught 5th grade, NO ONE in my class knew that Canada was the country that bordered North of the United States and Mexico bordered south of the United States. Not a single student. Furthermore, when we went to study current events several of my students identified the “middle east” as places like Ohio–you know, kind of in the middle, but eastern part of the United States. A good knowledge of geography is essential to understanding politics, government and current events. With that said, here is a list of … Continue reading

Are You Who You Want To Be?

Recently, as I was researching information for this Blog, I came upon a headline that caught my attention. It read: “Michelle Bachelet, President and Single Mom.” At first I thought, how interesting, she must have become the president of a company or a local social club or some other small type of organization. I decided to read the full article and was very pleasantly surprised when I found out that Michelle Bachelet, President and single mother is the recently elected President of Chile! According to Wikpedia.com, Dr. Bachelet is, “Her country’s first female elected president and the first woman who … Continue reading
